Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) can develop after a frightening or traumatic experience. This might be a single incident or a series of multiple incidents. Treatment for PTSD helps you understand how trauma has affected you and gives you tools to manage symptoms so you can start to rebuild a life that feels like your own again.
At Castle Health, we offer PTSD treatment for people aged 16 and over, including support for complex PTSD. Care is available as outpatient services, residential programmes and online sessions across the UK and Europe. Our approach is evidence‑based, and our private programmes also support people who are living with addiction or other mental health difficulties.

PTSD treatment – understanding your options
The best option depends on what you’re finding most difficult at the moment and how much support you need. We’ll also take into account your health, what your home environment is like, and how much time you can dedicate to treatment.

Residential treatment for PTSD
Residential treatment means staying at one of our centres for a period of time and receiving round-the-clock therapeutic and medical care.
We’ll recommend this if our team feels you need more care than outpatient or online therapy can provide. In that situation, having time away from your usual environment, with a team around you throughout, can make it easier to focus on treatment.
Our inpatient treatment centres are Smarmore Castle in Ireland and Castle Craig in Scotland.
Outpatient treatment for PTSD
Outpatient treatment involves regular one-to-one or group therapy sessions without needing to stay overnight at a Castle Health centre. Sessions can take place in person or online, and you and your therapist can decide together how often you meet and review this as things change. It can also be used after residential treatment if you’d like ongoing help while you settle back into everyday life.
Online therapy for PTSD
Online treatment gives you access to scheduled appointments with a therapist, without needing to travel to a clinic. Sessions happen remotely, either over the phone or via secure video call. We also offer online therapy as part of our residential rehab aftercare programme.
I contacted Castle Health [formerly CATCH Recovery] seeking guidance and options to support a relative who was having a difficult time both with addiction and other mental health concerns. The team were incredibly kind and informed, they took the time to go through all the options with me and helped us plan how to approach the matter. Fortunately the person has now been receiving care from [CATCH] for several months and is doing really well. A big thank you to the wonderful team! I would highly recommend this service.

What to expect from PTSD treatment with Castle Health
Assesment
PTSD treatment begins with an initial assessment. We’ll ask about:
- The symptoms you’re experiencing
- How long have these symptoms been present
- Your physical and mental health
- Any past support or treatment you’ve had
- Any current risks or safety concerns
- If you’re also struggling with alcohol, drugs or self-harm
This helps our clinicians decide whether residential care, outpatient support, or online therapy is likely to work best for you. The assessment is also there to give you space to ask questions before you decide on next steps.
Medication support for PTSD
Medication can be used as part of PTSD treatment if a person is struggling with symptoms like panic, poor sleep or low mood. Medication doesn’t treat the trauma, but it can be a helpful aid to have alongside therapy. Any medication is prescribed after a full assessment and reviewed regularly alongside therapy.
Trauma-focused therapy for PTSD
Therapy is a core part of treatment for PTSD and complex PTSD. We offer a range of evidence-based approaches, including trauma-focused CBT, EMDR, stabilisation work and grounding techniques.
Complementary therapies for PTSD
At our PTSD treatment centres, this can include classes with a fitness specialist, equine therapy, guided hikes, yoga sessions and other activities designed to help you reconnect with your body.
Aftercare and ongoing support
Help doesn’t stop the day residential treatment finishes. Our team can stay in touch through check‑ins, access to an alumni community, or further therapy if you need it.

Frequently asked questions about addiction and PTSD treatment
What’s the most effective treatment for PTSD?
Post-traumatic stress disorder treatment is usually most effective when it includes trauma-focused therapy. This helps people work through what happened in a safe and supported way, so memories feel less intrusive over time. For many people, the most helpful approach combines therapy with practical support and sometimes medication, moving at a pace the person can handle.
How long does PTSD treatment take?
There’s no fixed timeline. Some people notice changes within a few months, while others need longer-term support, particularly if trauma has been ongoing or happened earlier in life. Complex PTSD treatment often takes more time, as it needs to address longer-standing patterns and help someone feel safe before working through deeper memories.
Can PTSD be cured?
PTSD isn’t usually described as something that can be cured in the traditional sense. Treatment aims to reduce how much the trauma affects your thoughts, emotions, and daily life. Many people find that with the right support, symptoms become much easier to manage, and life no longer revolves around what happened.
Will I have to relive my trauma in therapy?
No. Trauma therapy doesn’t mean being forced to relive everything that happened. At a PTSD treatment centre, therapy moves at your pace and focuses on helping you feel safe before anything is discussed in detail. You’re always in control of what you share and when.
How much does private PTSD treatment cost?
The cost of private PTSD treatment varies depending on the type of support needed and how long treatment lasts. There isn’t a single fixed price, so the best way to get a clear picture is to speak with our team directly. They can explain what’s involved and what costs to expect based on the level of care that’s right for you.
