Choosing the right rehab treatment for addiction isn’t always straightforward. Do you consider residential or outpatient rehab? Do you look into detox first or addiction therapy? Is funding better via the NHS or through paying privately? Since 1988, Castle Health has been helping people access a rehab treatment model that offers them the best chance of lasting recovery.

Addiction is frequently misunderstood, but it’s a medical and psychological condition that requires specialist care and access to professionals who truly understand it at its core.

As a family-run organisation with more than forty years of experience, staying true to our values is central to everything we do. The quality of care we provide has never wavered, and our team of consultant psychiatrists and therapists are there to provide clinically informed, compassionate care.

What is rehab treatment?

Rehab treatment supports people who need clinically guided help for drug, alcohol, or behavioural addiction. It focuses on helping you stop using substances safely, understand the causes of addiction, and build skills to support recovery at home.

Drug treatment rehab usually takes place in stages. Where needed, this begins with a medically managed detox, with doctors and nurses providing round-the-clock care to manage withdrawal symptoms. This is followed by therapeutic rehab treatment, including therapy sessions that explore and address the emotional and psychological reasons behind addiction.

At the end of your stay with us, we support you by planning for long-term recovery.

Private UK rehab treatment for alcohol and drug addiction

It can be difficult to understand the difference in treatment centres, what they actually do and what they offer, and cut through all the noise. We like to keep things simple, clear and help people to find the right centre and treatment for them. There are many certified private rehab treatment options across the UK, including our own Castle Craig centre near Edinburgh.

Rehab programmes for alcohol and drug addiction will be slightly different for each person, because the substance you used and how long you used it for make your situation unique.

The types of rehab available with Castle Health include:

  • Alcohol rehab
  • Drug rehab
  • Prescription drug rehab
  • Behavioural addiction rehab

Addiction can also go hand-in-hand with struggles like anxiety or depression. Almost three-quarters of adults starting treatment between 2023 and 2024 said they needed help with a mental health problem, so it’s important to understand your full history.

That’s why, at Castle Health, alongside rehab for drug, alcohol or behavioural addictions like gambling or gaming, we also provide rehab treatment for depression and other mental health issues.

When should I think about going to rehab?

We know from experience that it can be hard to reach the point of saying, “I need to go to rehab,” but if you find yourself questioning whether you should, it may be time to talk things through with someone experienced in addiction care.

Signs that it could be time to seek comprehensive rehab treatment

We know it takes courage to recognise that the way you’re living isn’t working anymore, or is beginning to take more from you than it gives back. If you resonate with any of the below, it may be worth contacting one of our addiction rehab treatment centres:

  • Loss of control: You might find that a substance or behaviour has become difficult to control, quit or cut down on.
  • Physical and mental health: You may feel your physical or mental wellbeing getting worse, which is often linked to alcohol or drug addiction.
  • Relationship problems: Your situation may be affecting relationships, family life or work.
  • Legal or money troubles: You could be having problems with money or work because you are struggling with addiction. There may even be legal troubles related to your substance use.
  • Obsessive thinking: Your substance of choice can begin to occupy much of your thinking, making it difficult to focus on everyday life or think about anything else.

Different rehab treatments available in the UK

Detox and withdrawal treatment

Medical detox is the first step if you’re physically dependent on alcohol or drugs and need medical support to safely withdraw. This treatment is available only during our inpatient rehab at either Castle Craig or Smarmore Castle rehab clinics.

With doctors and nurses monitoring you throughout, detox usually takes anywhere from 24 hours to ten days and is designed for people whose addiction requires inpatient support.

Inpatient rehab treatment

Inpatient treatment means living in a rehab centre full-time, usually for between four and 12 weeks. While you’re there, you’ll get professional help and therapy for substance misuse to keep you feeling safe and supported.

Outpatient and day treatment options

If you can’t take time away from work or family, outpatient treatment lets you attend therapy sessions while living at home.

Castle Health’s approach to addiction rehab treatment

Addiction is a medical condition. It requires medical treatment that includes consultant-led care, evidence-based therapies, and 24-hour nursing support during detox when required.

It also needs an understanding of why people use substances in the first place. After over 35 years of experience, Castle Health offers comprehensive rehab treatment that addresses both.

At Castle Health, we offer:

Medically managed care led by consultants

Every person who comes to us works with an addiction therapist and a consultant psychiatrist. Together, they build your treatment plan based on your assessment.

They explore what you’re using, how long you’ve been using it, your medical history, any mental health conditions like depression or anxiety, and what’s been going on in your life that might be connected.

Evidence-based and trauma-informed therapies

Our rehab treatment uses psychotherapy methods like Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and family counselling to get to the root of what you’re feeling. We understand that trauma can be a cause of addiction in some patients, so we’ll always focus on helping you handle any underlying issues as well as the physical symptoms of addiction.

Continuing care after your rehab treatment

Support doesn’t end when you leave. Castle Health provides continuing care after you complete treatment at one of our centres, so you know you’re still supported when you return to your day-to-day life.

What to expect during rehab

It’s normal to feel nervous about going into rehab treatment, because you’re entering into something new and unknown. We’re a family-run business, and creating a home away from home is important to us. Here’s what to expect from your treatment:

  • Assessment and personalised treatment plans: When you arrive, our team of expert doctors and therapists will spend time getting to know you and your history.
  • Medically supervised detox: Only if required and for as long as you need.
  • Daily schedule and therapeutic activities: Your days will be structured but rewarding, filled with different kinds of group therapy and one-to-one therapies that help you learn new ways to cope.
  • 12 Step facilitation and group support: The 12 Step approach is used by people all over the world to help them stay connected and accountable. We use its principles throughout your personalised treatment.
  • Dual diagnosis and psychiatric care: It’s very common for people with addiction to struggle with conditions like anxiety or depression. Our rehab locations across Castle Health offer support for mental health when needed.
  • Family involvement and support: We understand that dependence on drugs or alcohol can affect your whole family. The people you love are an important part of your recovery, so we offer programmes that help you and your family learn how to support each other and find ways of moving forward together.

How long is rehab treatment?

The length of your addiction rehab treatment depends on what you need, and this can change over time. Usually, an inpatient stay lasts between four and twelve weeks.

Our residential programmes at Castle Craig and Smarmore Castle typically last a minimum of four weeks. This gives your mind and body time to adjust so you can begin your recovery with stability.

If you receive treatment in one of our residential rehab centres, you’ll also have the option of continuing care once treatment ends. This can continue for roughly 6 months (or for as long as you choose).

Castle Health’s 28-day outpatient rehab programme is available in-person and online.
